BIO

KIERAN SHEA’s fiction has appeared in dozens of venues including Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Thuglit, Dogmatika, Word Riot, Plots with Guns, Beat to a Pulp, Crimefactory, and Needle: A Magazine of Noir ...as well as in some beefy-looking anthologies most of which will make you question the tether of his shiny, red balloon. To his self-deprecating astonishment he's also been nominated for the Story South’s Million Writers Award twice without sending the judges so much as a thank you note. He co-edited the satiric transgressive fiction collection D*CKED: DARK FICTION INSPIRED BY DICK CHENEY and his debut novel KOKO TAKES A HOLIDAY is out now from Titan Books. Kieran divides his time between 38°58′22.6″N- 76°30′4.17″W and 39.2775° N, 74.5750° W.

Sorry for the delay...

Wow. Sorry for the delay. Lotsofstuffandstuff happening. Edits. Publicity on Koko Takes a Holiday. Really, do you want to know all this? Sheesh. Nothing much else to say, but lately I've been thinking about Peter Wessel Zapffe a whole lot...I think because I've been reading survival stories. To wit:

"Why, then, has mankind not long ago gone extinct during great epidemics of madness? Why do only a fairly minor number of individuals perish because they fail to endure the strain of living- because cognition gives them more than they can carry? Cultural history, as well as observation of ourselves and others, allow the following answer: Most people learn to save themselves by artificially limiting the content of consciousness."

Why a Halligan Bar?

Small, five-question interview at TOR dot com today. Hear all about Koko's genesis, Ron Currie, Jr., Milo Minderbinder, and the advantages of a Halligan bar in the zombie wasteland (pictured right...nasty.) Fun stuff. Onward.

Wrote a Novel/Published Today

So today....officially KOKO TAKES A HOLIDAY is out. Bookstores. Amazon. And blah, blah, blah.  It's been a long road. Thanks to all who believed in me. You know who you are. Onward.

Cyborg Tiger Sharks, Jed, Icarus, Etc.

Nifty quick  "Take 5" interviewon the Random House Sci Fi/Fantasy blog today....thanks to Titan PR London. Gets some here. Been doing a few of these recently...interviews I mean. It gets challenging not to repeat yourself, and I appreciate the abbreviated format of tell us five things about the book no one can't assess or figure out for themselves. Onward.

Bag Man

Nice to see my publisher is working hard at promotion. Apparently these bags were spotted at Forbidden Planet, the world's largest and best known science fiction bookstore. Back to edits. Onward.

Publicity SFX -Zoinks!

It appears I've made the issue of SFX. Flattered, I'm sure. Me, Captain America, and the hot gun-girl from The Walking Dead on the same page. Pretty cool, huh? With the book coming out in one month I suppose these things are expected as there are swarms of amazing worker bees behind the scenes. Me? Hell, I'm just combing out the final nits of draft three of KOKO 2.0...Koko the Mighty. Wherever fine magazines and cigars are sold.

Damn right, I'll take it.

Dreams

Closing in on the last 20 pages on WIP.  Lots happening with the novel, getting ready for publicity and such. Anyway, I saw this today, and I needed to share the coolness. Onward.

Sometimes you put things off. For decades now I've put off reading THE SHARK-INFESTED CUSTARD because it was the only book by the late Charles Willeford that I haven't read, and I figured if I read it...well...that would be it. Nothing more to look forward to on Willeford front. Like many, Mr. Willeford is one of my favorite writers and certainly a pivotal influence in terms of crime writing. Anyway, this week I saw a copy and finally gave in...the reward has been stone-cold, succinct, and observant...I'm having a ball reading it. Get some:

Psychopaths are generally well satisfied with themselves and with their inner landscape, bleak as it may seem to outside observers. They see nothing wrong with themselves, experience little personal distress, and find their behavior rational, rewarding, and satisfying; they never look back with regret or forward with concern. They perceive themselves as superior beings in a hostile, dog-eat-dog world in which others are competitors for power and resources. Psychopaths feel it is legitimate to manipulate and deceive others in order to obtain their “rights,” and their social interactions are planned to outmaneuver the malevolence they see in others.

It Now Gets Juicy: WIP

"Blood is a juice with curious properties." - Mephistopheles Faust

Reaching the end of the edit on the WIP, and it is fairly frenzied.  So much action you need to to be careful you don't rush it. But there's light at the end of the tunnel. I had been shooting for April 1st for finishing up this pass, but always things look easier at the start. 2nd pass is faster. Lots of good news from the publicist yesterday regarding KOKO TAKES A HOLIDAY. Seems in the coming weeks there I'll be interviewed a heck of a lot. Onward.

"Life? Don't talk to me about life."

How Many Years? 5

Maybe this is too soon, but I'm posting it anyway. You want things to change, but they don't because of feckless leadership. Oh, you're just overreacting? Am I? Then defend this. Outlets will trot out the same old excuses, pundits, twit-wits, and fools and nothing--I repeat--NOTHING will change. Sad and senseless and damning on so many levels it makes my head hurt. Onward.

SWTWB: Kaku

“Beyond work and love, I would add two other ingredients that give meaning to life. First, to fulfill whatever talents we are born with. However blessed we are by fate with different abilities and strengths, we should try to develop them to the fullest, rather than allow them to atrophy and decay. We all know individuals who did not fulfill the promise they showed in childhood. Many of them became haunted by the image of what they might have become. Instead of blaming fate, I think we should accept ourselves as we are and try to fulfill whatever dreams are within our capability. Second, we should try to leave the world a better place than when we entered it. As individuals, we can make a difference, whether it is to probe the secrets of Nature, to clean up the environment and work for peace and social justice, or to nurture the inquisitive, vibrant spirit of the young by being a mentor and a guide.” ― Michio Kaku

Saturday Thought

Today I am making Hawaiian-styled lamb, reading Chabon and Randy White, watching hockey and Premier League football/soccer, and basically f**king off. The sequel to KOKO TAKES A HOLIDAY, at least the first draft comb-through, is taking shape and making me laugh so I am cutting myself some slack today. It sometimes is a desolate, lonely struggle breaking your characters hearts, and one needs a reprieve. Onward.

Wed. Words to Write By: Mr. Happy Go Lucky

"Compared to the refined culture of sclerotic forms and frames, which mask everything, the lyrical mode is utterly barbarian in its expression. Its value resides precisely in its savage quality: it is only blood, sincerity, and fire." -Emile Michelle Cioran

Yes, it's depressing that the oceans are warming but some days, man, I selfishly pine for the bath. This winter, gosh, it just never seems to end. Today's snow is infuriating. April, where are you? Come in, April, over. The 5 mm neoprene ain't cutting it. Onward.
