Sometimes you put things off. For decades now I've put off reading THE SHARK-INFESTED CUSTARD because it was the only book by the late Charles Willeford that I haven't read, and I figured if I read it...well...that would be it. Nothing more to look forward to on Willeford front. Like many, Mr. Willeford is one of my favorite writers and certainly a pivotal influence in terms of crime writing. Anyway, this week I saw a copy and finally gave in...the reward has been stone-cold, succinct, and observant...I'm having a ball reading it. Get some:
Psychopaths are generally well satisfied with themselves and with their
inner landscape, bleak as it may seem to outside observers. They see
nothing wrong with themselves, experience little personal distress, and
find their behavior rational, rewarding, and satisfying; they never look
back with regret or forward with concern. They perceive themselves as
superior beings in a hostile, dog-eat-dog world in which others are
competitors for power and resources. Psychopaths feel it is legitimate
to manipulate and deceive others in order to obtain their “rights,” and
their social interactions are planned to outmaneuver the malevolence they see in others.

To his self-deprecating astonishment he's also been nominated for the Story South’s Million Writers Award twice without sending the judges so much as a thank you note. He co-edited the satiric transgressive fiction collection D*CKED: DARK FICTION INSPIRED BY DICK CHENEY and his debut novel KOKO TAKES A HOLIDAY is out now from Titan Books. Kieran divides his time between 38°58′22.6″N- 76°30′4.17″W and 39.2775° N, 74.5750° W.
