<i>"Why, then, has mankind not long ago gone extinct during great epidemics
of madness? Why do only a fairly minor number of individuals perish

Nifty quick "Take 5" interviewon the Random House Sci Fi/Fantasy blog today....thanks to Titan PR London. Gets some <a href="http://suvudu.com/2014/06/take-five-with-kieran-shea-author-koko-takes-a-holiday.html"><b><span style="color: red;">here.</span></b></a> Been doing a few of these recently...interviews I mean. It gets challenging not to repeat yourself, and I appreciate the abbreviated format of tell us five things about the book no one can't assess or figure out for themselves. Sometimes you put things off. For decades now I've put off reading THE SHARK-INFESTED CUSTARD because it was the only book by the late Charles Willeford that I haven't read, and I figured if I read it...well...that would be it. Nothing more to look forward to on Willeford front. Like many, Mr. Willeford is one of my favorite writers and certainly a pivotal influence in terms of crime writing. Anyway, this week I saw a copy and finally gave in...the reward has been stone-cold, succinct, and observant...I'm having a ball reading it. Get some:<i> </i><br />

<i>Psychopaths are generally well satisfied with themselves and with their
inner landscape, bleak as it may seem to outside observers. They see
nothing wrong with themselves, experience little personal distress, and
find their behavior rational, rewarding, and satisfying; they never look
back with regret or forward with concern. They perceive themselves as
superior beings in a hostile, dog-eat-dog world in which others are
competitors for power and resources. Psychopaths feel it is legitimate
to manipulate and deceive others in order to obtain their “rights,” and
their social interactions are planned to outmaneuver the malevolence they see in others.</i>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2104787240929538766.post-17270352117679884222014-04-09T06:13:00.000-04:002014-04-09T06:13:06.800-04:00It Now Gets Juicy: WIP<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Reaching the end of the edit on the WIP, and it is fairly frenzied. So much action you need to to be careful you don't rush it. But there's light at the end of the tunnel. I had been shooting for April 1st for finishing up this pass, but always things look easier at the start. 2nd pass is faster. Lots of good news from the publicist yesterday regarding KOKO TAKES A HOLIDAY. Seems in the coming weeks there I'll be interviewed a heck of a lot. Maybe this is too soon, but I'm posting it anyway. You want things to change, but they don't because of feckless leadership. Oh, you're just overreacting? Am I? Then defend this. Outlets will trot out the same old excuses, pundits, twit-wits, and fools and nothing--I repeat--NOTHING will change. Sad and senseless and damning on so many levels it makes my head hurt. Onward.

meaning to life. First, to fulfill whatever talents we are born with.
However blessed we are by fate with different abilities and strengths,
we should try to develop them to the fullest, rather than allow them to
atrophy and decay. We all know individuals who did not fulfill the
promise they showed in childhood. Many of them became haunted by the
image of what they might have become. Instead of blaming fate, I think
we should accept ourselves as we are and try to fulfill whatever dreams
are within our capability. Second, we should try to leave the
world a better place than when we entered it. As individuals, we can
make a difference, whether it is to probe the secrets of Nature, to
clean up the environment and work for peace and social justice, or to
nurture the inquisitive, vibrant spirit of the young by being a mentor
and a guide.”

Today I am making Hawaiian-styled lamb, reading Chabon and Randy White, watching hockey and Premier League football/soccer, and basically f**king off. The sequel to KOKO TAKES A HOLIDAY, at least the first draft comb-through, is taking shape and making me laugh so I am cutting myself some slack today. It sometimes is a desolate, lonely struggle breaking your characters hearts, and one needs a reprieve. Yes, it's depressing that the oceans are warming but some days, man, I selfishly pine for the bath. This winter, gosh, it just never seems to end. Today's snow is infuriating. April, where are you? Come in, April, over. The 5 mm neoprene ain't cutting it. <span style="font-family: inherit;">In a bolt of self-indulgence after treating myself to two loaded chilli dogs from <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/anns-dari-creme-glen-burnie"><span style="color: red;">Ann's Dari Creme</span></a> in Glenn Burnie, MD (no Rutt's Hut (NJ) or Yocco's (PA) but damn fine stuff, Marylanders--what's up with the spelling?) I decided to update the bloggage with a musical entry. As I am in the midst of slashing up the sequel to my first novel, I've realized I haven't built myself a play list for inspiration like I did when I was writing KOKO TAKES A HOLIDAY. These days I mostly listen to Bach while editing, but when I was suffering through the drafts of the first book, I often played a particular set of songs to fire up my juices. Every writer I know imagines a soundtrack to their novels (a vain hope of selling the film rights, I suppose), but anyway here's my play list. I believe all are available on YouTube in some format if you're interested...."<i>Heroes</i>" -David Bowie; "<i>Enjoy Yourself</i>" -The Specials; "<i>Turn It On</i>" -The Flaming Lips; "<i>Pandemonium</i>" -Killing Joke; "<i>Small Talk</i>" (Four Tet Remix) -Ultraista; "<i>Doom and Gloom</i>" (Jeff Bashkir Mix) -The Rolling Stones; "<i>Working Class Hero</i>" (John Lennon cover) -Green Day; "<i>Purple Haze</i>" -Groove Armada; "<i>Love Theme</i>" -Moby; "<i>Angel</i>" -Massive Attack; "<i>Heaven's Dead</i>" -Audioslave;<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS 明朝"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"> "<i>Kashi

Think primary elements (<a href="http://www.roundbaysailing.com/"><span style="color: blue;"><b>cool SE winds</b></span></a>, frosty beverages, neglected friends, big books, <a href="http://www.oceancity-nj.com/blogarticles/oceancity-kites.cfm"><span style="color: #134f5c;"><b>silly kite flying</b></span></a>, skee-ball, etc.) and you are on the right track. May I recommend that you get <a href="http://magicseaweed.com/Ocean-City-NJ-Surf-Report/391/"><span style="color: #741b47;"><b>some</b></span></a>, because there's only one ending to all of this, and you damn well know it. I mean, they have served up some fine cinematic noir these past ten years, but...I don't know. It seems so attractive, but plugging in surfing as a movie's primary backdrop always...<i>ALWAYS</i>...becomes camp. I mean, really, the first forty seconds of the trailer and "ripped from true events"? WTF is that? You goddamn kooks. I dare you to cite the exception. Okay, maybe <a href="http://youtu.be/V1WF7upgLFU"><span style="color: red;"><b>this</b></span></a>, but---God--who came up with the title? Did they just mail that in or what? Onward.<br />
